KCCA FC on the verge of returning to CAF Confederation Cup group stages

KCCA FC are one dominant win away from returning to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup for the first time since 2019.

The Lugogo side will face Libyan side Abu Salem on Saturday at St Mary’s stadium in Kitende, needing to overturn a 3-1 deficit from the first leg.

What KCCA coach said

KCCA’s biggest challenge has been lapses in defense and a wanting striking force, but coach Sergio Traguil has promised that they have worked on these areas.

“This game means a lot. We have to play like KCCA, the biggest club in the country,” said Traguil.

“Just like we conceded three goals away, I believe we can also score two or more goals at home. We have to avoid mistakes which could cost us, and we have to be clinical in the final third.”

Traguil will not be on the touchline for the match, as he does not have the required UEFA pro license. Assistant Luis Manuel Correira will take charge in his absence.

KCCA player availability

Defender Mustafa Mujuzi is suspended for the match after picking up a red card in the first leg.

Teenage sensation Abubaker Mayanja scored KCCA’s crucial away goal as a substitute.

Congolese forward Simon Kankonde is also unavailable, reportedly having gone AWOL.

New signings Mustafa Kizza and Emmanuel Loki will also not be part of the game, as they were not registered for continental competition.

KCCA made it to the CAF Confederation Cup after finishing second in the Ugandan Premier League.

They were given a bye in the first qualification round following their impressive performances in 2017 and 2018, when they qualified for the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup and Champions League, respectively.

KCCA will receive $400,000 if they make it to the group stages. This is the least prize money offered by CAF to teams that finish third and fourth in the group stages.

The champions of the competition receive $2 million, while runners-up, semi-finalists, and quarter-finalists take home $1 million, $750,000, and $550,000, respectively.
