Kiira College Butiki are the 2023 winners of Father Grimes National Schools Chess Championship boys category.
This follows their morning win in the final round of the competition over St. Henry’s College Kitovu on Tuesday.
After assuming the top position in the sixth round, Butiki went into the penultimate round level on points with Kitovu.
Ntare School finished second while Kyadondo completed the podium in third position.
Ndejje SS and Jinja College Mwiri completed the top five. Meanwhile, defending champions Kings College Budo came in at a lowly 20th position.
In the girls’ category, St. Andrews Kaggwa won the trophy without losing a single game despite not getting maximum points.
They won six and drew twice. Maryhill High School, Wampewo SS, Iganga SS, and Budo were 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively.
KCCA PS tops Primary section
In the Primary section of the Father Grimes National Schools Chess Championship, KCCA PS – Kamwokya beat Mustard Seed to the boy’s trophy by just a tiebreaker in the Open category.
Both sides won 6 and drew twice, finishing with 18 points each but KCCA won the tiebreaker, Sir Apollo Kaggwa finished third.
In the girls’ category, Peak PS took home the trophy while St. Theresa Namagunga PS A and B finished second and third respectively.
In the individual show, Elvis Mugisha from Mount Olives emerged as the best player on board one with an unbeaten 8 points.
For board two, Pius Mugisha from Wampewo owned it winning seven out of eight while Shabib Mohammed from Bukedea SS bossed board 3 with a sweep.
The final board, which is fourth, was won by Freddy Mugisha from Kisubi High School who also won all his games.
