Rome wasn’t built in one day and so every new development to Kings Park Arena Bweyogerere is a building block to its future success.
With its changing face will come the pressure to host bigger tournaments and events. When that happens, the locals will gain massively.
The trio of playing grounds at the facility so far offers a lot of diversity and if you are looking at the fact that all draw a new crowd to the already existing one.
The idea behind Kings Park in the suburbs of Bweyogerere has a more sustainable brand for sports and recreational development than many modern facilities in the country.
What they said
“We currently have a swimming pool, sand playground, rugby pitch and a side pitch for Sunday football. Next is a basketball court and tennis to make it a semi sports complex,” Pirates player who is part of the Club House management told Nnalubaale Sports.
It isn’t built like Mandela National Stadium, Namboole it’s closet neighbour but it has the ability to impact the sports fraternity and locals more than Namboole because of the various sports disciplines it habours and where it’s situated.
Rugby is the main sports discipline thanks to two league outfits in Pirates and the Black Pearls the women side at the facility but now, Sunday football in Old Students Leagues like that of Ndejje SS, Ntare School are enjoying the facility.
Now, a sand arena is up and running at the venue and last month, it hosted it’s maiden tournament in a National Beach Volleyball Open.
This was perhaps an opportunity to showcase the best of what the multi purpose sports facility can become and with plans of having basketball courts and a swimming pool already in place, the facility is making positive strides.
The rugby pitch has done bit in terms of drawing crowds to the Arena and in doing so the complex has come to life and has a steady stream of patrons.
It has been home to training sessions for national side, both the 7s and 15s.
“We have been privileged to host national teams training sessions and trial games here and the dream is to have an Elgon Cup fixture here,” Bwembale added.
Community Benefits
This is the kind of niche that has a lot of potential in terms of attracting new fans. You can already tell that part of Bweyogerere is slowly changing.
The locals are more aware of the little gem in their neighbourhoods but are still pensive about the opportunities they can tap into.
For a fact the boda-boda’s are earning more on match days but the food scene is also a big draw of crowds.
“We want to host big events in the future such as Blankets and Wine, Roast and Rhymes among others,” Bwembale revealed.
Speaking of big crowds, the secret is in an innovation, The Rugby Chill. A child of the national lockdown that used to pull big crowds on Sundays but is now a full week partying experience.
This forced the management to build a club house which has dressing rooms and toilets for the revellers.
With 40 feet containers on the ground, the plan is to separate the players and the party animals.
