Uganda’s Martin Kiprotich turned the rugged slopes of the Spanish Pyrenees into a showcase of grit on Sunday, racing to silver in the men’s classic event at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships.
From the gun, Kiprotich set the pace, attacking the first 14-kilometre climb and opening a 14-second lead over Kenya’s Philemon Kiriago.
Fellow Ugandan Ken Koros followed close behind as seasoned rivals, including Kenya’s Paul Machoka and American Mason Coppi, tried to close the gap.
“I felt strong early and wanted to test everyone,” Kiprotich said later, a quiet smile hinting at the effort.
The descent proved decisive. Kiriago, famed for his fearless downhill running, gradually caught Kiprotich, drawing cheers from the Spanish crowd near the Canfranc International Railway Station.
On the final plunge, Kiriago surged past, winning in 1:00:38. Kiprotich crossed in 1:01:26, five seconds ahead of Machoka.
Uganda secured team silver behind Kenya, with Koros contributing to the tally. “It was a tough race, but I’m proud of how I ran,” Kiprotich said. “To win silver for my country means a lot.”
Kenya claimed both men’s and women’s team golds.
