Claire Lamunu believes Uganda’s women’s basketball team can go the distance at this year’s FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.

After beating Guinea 88–51 on Sunday and stunning Senegal 73–70 in overtime on Monday, the Gazelles have booked a place in the quarterfinals, where they’ll face either Egypt or South Sudan.

“We started slow with a lot of turnovers, but bouncing back and winning shows how much fight this team has,” Lamunu said. “If we keep correcting our mistakes, we can go far.”

It’s just Uganda’s second AfroBasket appearance in more than 10 years, but Lamunu says the team is proving it belongs.

“The win meant a lot. We’re a young team, but we’ve shown we can compete at this level,” she added. “It was a dogfight, but we pulled through.”

She also thanked fans for their support and urged them to keep it going.

“Please keep showing up, whether we’re winning or not, we’re giving it our all.”

Uganda’s next game is Thursday. And if Lamunu’s belief is anything to go by, the Gazelles are here to make history.
