Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) president Moses Magogo doesn’t understand why African governments secure sponsorship deals with European football teams.
While the major aim of the deals in question is boosting the economy through tourism and football development, the FUFA boss doesn’t entirely buy the idea.
Rwanda for instance secured a deal with Bayern Munich for five years, adding to their already existing partnerships with PSG and Arsenal.
“I have failed to appreciate African Governments to become a new source of revenue to European Clubs,” Magogo said.
“We cannot be lacking sporting infrastructure and spend 12m USD per year just to appear on the Arsenal Shirt,” the legislator added in disbelief.
“I rather we finish the high Altitude centre and produce more Cheptegeis and Kiplimos, more Mugabi the beast, create a Ugandan player in the EPL by converting one Government secondary school into an academy,” he advised.
While announcing Bayern as their main sponsor on Saturday, the Rwandan government also claimed they had reaped big in terms of increase in tourism revenue from the PSG and Arsenal deals.
Rwanda also boasts some of the best sports facilities in Africa including the Kigali Arena that has hosted several international events including the 2023 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket.
