Uganda Hockey has ushered in a fresh chapter with the appointment of Martin Okello as Head Coach of the Women’s National Team.
Announced on 15th November 2025 in Kampala, the move places one of the country’s brightest coaching minds at the centre of the sport’s next phase of growth.
For many, Okello’s rise has felt inevitable. As a Senior Coach with Hockey Dreams Foundation and Kakungulu Memorial School, he has earned a reputation for discipline, creativity and a keen eye for player development.
His teams are known for their structure and confidence, trademarks of his patient, detail-driven approach.
His coaching outlook was sharpened further in the Netherlands through the elite Sports Ways Program, where he deepened his technical and performance management skills.
Those experiences now feed directly into Uganda’s ambitions on the continental stage.
Okello has also been integral to the national setup since May 2024, serving as Assistant Coach and helping strengthen the squad’s technical and physical foundations. His promotion is a natural next step, and a strong vote of confidence.
He now takes charge at a crucial time. One of his first responsibilities will be integrating the exciting young players who recently represented Uganda at the Junior World Cup Qualifiers, a group widely seen as the future of the sport.
Working with the new National Development Officer and an incoming Technical Bench, Martin is expected to tighten the link between junior and senior levels and establish a steady pipeline of talent.
His appointment also brings to a close the impactful tenure of outgoing coach Moses Nsereko.
Since 2019, Nsereko has reshaped women’s hockey in Uganda, leading the U19s to bronze at the FIH Hockey 5s, guiding the Senior Team to their first ever Africa Cup of Nations appearance in 2022, capturing the 2024 Zambezi Series title in Zambia and securing fourth place at the 2025 Junior World Cup Qualifiers in Namibia.
Uganda Hockey has expressed its gratitude to Nsereko for his leadership and service as the baton now passes to Okello, a coach ready to build on that legacy.
