Our star of the day is Micheal Nuwagaba, the president of the Uganda Cricket Association. He is arguably the most successful sports administrator in the history of Uganda.

Nuwagaba replaced Bashir Ansasira in 2021 having previously served as Secretary of the local cricket governing body and immediately set out to secure ODI status for the country among other things.

Under his stewardship, the sport has grown by leaps and bounds. On 30th November 2023 history was made when the Cricket Cranes beat Rwanda by 9 wickets to seal their spot at the World Cup for the very first time.

A few weeks later they would go on to beat neighbours Kenya by 91 runs to successfully defend the ACA T20 Africa Cup. The success has not been limited to just the men’s team as the women’s team, the Victoria Pearls, have also dominated the region.

In December 2023, the ladies finished second behind Zimbabwe in the regional qualifiers for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifiers set for Dubai in 2024.

These qualifiers were hosted by Uganda at the Entebbe Cricket Oval in addition to the Challenge League B series for the Cricket Cranes in 2022 which were also hosted in the Pearl of Africa, showcasing top notch organizational skills.

All this success has been in part due to a deliberate plan by Nuwagaba and the team he continues to lead with distinction. The senior sides in both genders have been fed players by the active Junior teams, a testament to focus on the grassroots.

The year 2024 looks promising and if Nuwagaba continues to pull the right strings, the future of Cricket in Uganda is a bright one. You can take that to the bank.

This means more!
