As the dig into the corruption within the various sports federations and the National Council of Sports continues, Sports Minister Peter Ogwang has toughened his stance on the matter.
He called out the Federation of Uganda Football Associations, Uganda Basketball Federation, and the Uganda Netball Federation (UNF) as the three federations always whining for funds, yet with the most rot.
“Why are we here? suspicious accountability! why should it be suspicious? why is it not clean? why is it only three federations out of the 51?” Ogwang wondered while in the Parliamentary Accounts Committee.
“As long as I am still Minister, you will account for the money. I don’t want you to come here and say there is a witch hunt,” a tough Ogwang rumbled.
“I have found a lot of street talk between the National Council of Sports and the federations,” he added.
“If the street talk and what is happening is true, in my tenure, even if Museveni gave me five months, it will stop!”
Among various investigations is one of the allegations of corruption at the UNF over the Ugx.100m funding for the men’s national team’s trip to South Africa.
The Asuman Basalirwa-led committee has reportedly handed over UNF President Sarah Babirye Kityo and two federation executives, the vice president technical, and the treasurer to Parliament’s Criminal Investigations Department.
