With his trademark finger held high – dance celebration, Allan Okello’s first season in the Tanzania Premier League is quickly turning into a defining one, with the Ugandan midfielder firmly in the race for both the Golden Boot and assist crown at Young Africans SC.

Okello arrived in Tanzania fresh from finishing as 2024/25 Uganda Premier League top scorer with 19 goals.

He has carried that form into Yanga, where he now has 11 goals and 7 assists, making an immediate impact since his big-money move.

The 25-year-old, known as “Star Boy,” joined Yanga on a three-year deal worth about Shs 1.08 billion ($300,000) in January 2026.

The transfer, one of the biggest involving an Ugandan player, was completed after Yanga president Hersi Said travelled to Uganda to finalise talks with Vipers SC chairman Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa.

Okello, a current medal winner with Vipers this season (2026) had six months left on his contract with Vipers SC at the time.

The move has paid off quickly, Okello scored a brace on Monday in Yanga’s 3-1 win over Namungo, keeping the champions in the title race and tightening his grip on individual honours. Yanga moved to 60 points, two ahead of Simba, with five matches remaining.

Yanga led through Duke Abuya in the 26th minute after a move set up by Mudathir Yahya. Namungo equalised in the 40th minute through Salum Kabunda, who finished from close range.

After halftime, Okello took over, he restored Yanga’s lead in the 53rd minute after Prince Dube won possession and set him up for a close range finish.

In the 85th minute, he sealed the win after Kibwana Shomari picked him out, and he beat his marker before finishing calmly.

The brace takes Okello to 11 league goals. He remains second in the scoring chart behind Azam’s Feisal Salum, who has 14, after also scoring a brace in his latest outing.

Yanga’s Prince Dube is on nine, while Simba’s Clatous Chama and Azam’s Iddy Nado both have eight.

Okello has now scored twice in each of his last four league matches, pushing him into strong contention not just for the Golden Boot but also the assist crown, with seven to his name.
