She Cranes were officially flagged off for the 2025 Celtic Netball Cup on Friday afternoon, but it was head coach Rashid Mubiru’s words that defined the moment.

The brief ceremony at Cooper Chimney, led by National Council of Sports Assistant General Secretary Milton Chebet, marked the team’s final stop before flying out for the November 26–30 tournament at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena.

For Mubiru, the flag off closed a demanding selection process.

“It hasn’t been an easy journey to trim the team from 28 to 14 since the ladies have been having the league rolling on,” he said, reflecting on weeks of tough decisions.

Still, Mubiru expressed full trust in the group he settled on. “Good enough, the past week we have had some full sessions in Nakilebbe and we are ready to deliver at the tournament. We are setting to leave on Sunday.”

Uganda enters the Celtic Cup with a clear target, lifting its world ranking from 7th to 6th.

The round robin competition features six teams: hosts Scotland, defending champions Wales, Northern Ireland, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Uganda.

New captain Racheal Nanyonga, one of the country’s most dependable shooters, assured supporters that the team is mentally sharp and physically prepared.

She also expects their stay in Scotland to fine tune combinations and strengthen on-court chemistry.

“We are ready for the task ahead,” Nanyonga said. “We know what this tournament means for Uganda, and we’re committed to delivering.”

Among the biggest talking points is the rise of Namukose Specioza, the only new face in the squad.

Her strong form in camp earned her a first national call-up, highlighting the team’s push to develop fresh talent.

Final 14-player squad

Mary Nuba, Margaret Baagala, Racheal Nanyonga (Captain), Achola Lillian, Kadondi Faridah, Christine Nakitto, Akello Malisera, Fildauce Namulema, Shakirah Nassaka, Namukose Specioza, Lillian Ajio, Nassanga Shadia, Shaffie Nalwanja, Ayaa Gloria.

The team travels on November 23 aboard Qatar Airways, with Mubiru and assistant coach Ruth Meeme leading the mission.
