Long-serving URA FC goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi has confirmed his departure from the club after seven years.

The Uganda Cranes custodian, who has also captained the Tax Collectors for the past two seasons, is reportedly set to join Ethiopian Defence Forces’ side Mekelakeya SC.

Alionzi leaves URA with a wealth of experience, having made 26 appearances in the Uganda Premier League last season, keeping 12 clean sheets.

He is a graduate of Makerere University and is considered one of the best goalkeepers in Uganda.

In a statement on social media, Alionzi thanked URA for giving him the opportunity to develop his career.

“Thank you, URA for giving a chance to an ambitious boy,” he said. “7 years of parenting and nurturing is not found everywhere.”

He also expressed his gratitude to the club’s management, technical team, support staff, players, and fans.

“My humble and sincere appreciation goes to the URA FC Management, the technical team, the support staff, the players, and the fans for your hospitality during my stay with you,” he said. “Wishing you the very best in your future endeavors.”

URA have already secured replacements for Alionzi, signing Denis Otim and Rogers Omedwa.

The club’s CEO, Patrick Isiagi, said that Alionzi’s departure was a big loss, but that they wished him well in his future career.

“Nafian is a great goalkeeper and we are sad to see him go,” he said. “But we understand his decision and wish him all the best in Ethiopia.”
