The Namuwongo Blazers kicked off the new season with a 63-59 win against last year’s first runner-up, KIU Titans.
Former Titans Joseph Chuma and Innocent Ochera turned on the heat against their former side to inspire their new side, Nam Blazers, to the win with 17 and 21 points, respectively.
Titans led through at halftime and looked set to force Blazers into an early season loss after completing the third quarter on top, but the Kansanga side fell apart in the fourth quarter, scoring only 7 points.
Blazers’ new man, Innocent Ochera, led all scorers in the game with 21 points, while Kasereka Tembo of the KIU Titans led the Kansanga side’s scorers with 18 points.
Joseph Chuma was awarded Player of the Game for his performance of 17 points, ten rebounds, three steals, one assist and four blocks.
Other games
The KIU Rangers started their campaign on a winning note with a 61-57 victory against the JT Lady Jaguars. This is the second season in the top flight for the JT Lady Jaguars, who made the semifinals last year but lost the series to the Rangers.
Amaniyo Rose Mary was the star of the night, collecting a massive double-double of 25 points and 20 boards to inspire the KIU Rangers to victory. Maimuna Nabbosa was the top scorer for the Jaguars on the night, scoring 18 points.
Ian Lubwama led the way for debutantes JT Jaguars men’s basketball club with 15 points, inspiring them to a 70-53 win against Livingstone.
In the earlier game, the UPDF Lady Tomahawks were handed a walkover against the YMCA Lady Hamsters, who failed to honour the fixture.
