National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLRGB) has joined forces with the Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) to launch a nationwide campaign promoting responsible gaming. The partnership aims to address the growing concerns surrounding gaming addiction and ensure regulatory compliance.

On October 16, 2024, stakeholders from various sectors gathered at the 4 Points by Sheraton Hotel for a responsible gaming engagement. The event focused on strengthening collaboration between journalists and the gaming industry to raise awareness and protect vulnerable individuals.

Counsel Samuel Lukambi, the FUFA Legal Officer, urged journalists to play a crucial role in promoting responsible gaming. He highlighted the need for accurate reporting and emphasized the dangers of irresponsible betting practices.

“It’s essential to report truthfully and avoid promoting false predictions,” Lukambi stated. “Journalists must protect young people from the negative impacts of gambling by refraining from advertising betting tips during the day.”

The 2023 News Sports Law Act prohibits individuals from acting as gaming intermediaries without a valid license. Lukambi advised journalists to obtain the necessary licenses to ensure they adhere to responsible gaming guidelines.

Denis Ngabirano, the CEO of NLRGB, commended USPA’s efforts in promoting sports activities in Uganda. He emphasized the importance of this partnership in fostering a positive gaming sector.

Moses Alsayed Lubega, the USPA president, called on fellow journalists to use their influence to combat irresponsible betting. He highlighted the potential dangers of excessive gambling and the need for responsible practices.

The nationwide campaign will raise awareness about responsible gaming, educate the public, and promote healthy gambling habits. By working together, NLRGB, USPA, and journalists can contribute to a safer and more responsible gaming environment in Uganda.
