Gazelles head coach Nicholas Natuhereza is pleased with how Uganda’s women’s basketball team is shaping up ahead of the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Speaking from their training base in Alexandria, Egypt, Natuhereza noted that the first few days were tough due to heat and fatigue but said the players are settling in well.

“The first two days were hard because of the weather and tired legs,” he said. “But they’re improving. Sunday’s rest will help us bounce back strong on Monday.”

The team has been boosted by the arrival of forward Claire Lamunu, a key returnee from last year’s Afrobasket. Lamunu averaged 8.5 points and 8.7 rebounds in 2023 and is expected to bring experience and leadership.

“Claire arrives tonight, and Paige [Robinson] tomorrow,” Natuhereza said. “The sooner they’re here, the better. We’ll work with the time we have to get them ready.”

Newcomer Mya Wasswa has also joined camp and is eyeing her senior debut. Natuhereza said she’s made a good impression early on.

“This was her second session. She looks sharp and fit,” he said. “She’ll need more time, but so far so good.”

Wasswa said she’s excited about the opportunity. “Being here is a blessing. Everyone’s been great,” she said. “It’s my first time, so I’m learning fast and adjusting to the pace.”

She believes Uganda’s quick style and aggressive defense could be their biggest weapons. “We’re a fast team. If we can control the tempo, we’ll have an edge.”

Uganda opens their campaign against Guinea on Sunday, July 27, and faces Senegal the next day.
