The University Football League (UFL) returns this Tuesday with a blockbuster clash between defending champions Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) and Bugema University at Nkozi Playground.
UMU will be looking to start the campaign with a win to make a statement as the defending champions, while Bugema, who are optimistic of winning this year’s championship, will target maximum away points to start their campaign.
Bugema University head coach Meddie Nyanzi has said that his team is determined to win the title this year.
“We are happy that the UFL is back, and we have been knocking on the champions’ door in the past years,” Nyanzi said.
“I believe this is our year to win the title, and we have to start winning games starting tomorrow. Our style of play is far different from other universities, and we have the pedigree and experience to lead us to our target.”
UMU coach Eric Kisuze has also said that his team is targeting a win against Bugema.
“Tomorrow’s encounter is the opening game, and such games are always tricky and unpredictable,” Kisuze said.
“We are playing the defending champions of East Africa games, and we expect a tough challenge, but with the quality at our team, we will squeeze them to win the game.”
Kisuze also confirmed that UMU’s target is to retain the championship.
“Starting the campaign with a big game means a lot, and as a team that is looking to retain the title, we must win every game to make it happen,” he said.
UMU captain Robert Kitabalwa is optimistic that his team will be victorious against Bugema.
“The league has had delays, but now it’s time to fight for our title again, and we’re excited,” Kitabalwa said.
“My fellow players who have been active, especially in the ongoing Masaza Cup tournament, will add a lot to the squad, and I believe at the end of the day, we will be victors.”
The other matches in the opening round of the UFL are:
- St. Lawrence vs. Nkumba (Wednesday, Kavule)
- Bishop Stuart vs. Isbat (Thursday, Mbarara)
- Kabale vs. UNIK (Friday, Kabale)
- Makerere vs. Kyambogo (Sunday, Makerere)
The UFL is expected to be a closely contested affair this year, with several teams capable of winning the title. UMU and Bugema are two of the favorites.
