After coming close to ending their 19-year league title drought last season, SC Villa will be looking to start the 2023/2024 season on a positive note when they host new entrants Kitara FC at Wankulukuku stadium on Friday.

The Jogoos finished third in the previous season, one point behind eventual champions Vipers and KCCA.

They will be hoping to challenge for the title this season, but they will be without several key players due to injuries.

Forward Denis Ojara and Tabu Oryem are both out with long-term injuries, while defender Edward Masembe, Jonah Kakande, Lutalo Umar, Ronald Sekiganda, and Joseph Kafumbe are also unavailable for tomorrow’s game.

However, Villa will welcome back captain Kenneth Ssemakula from national team duties, and he will be a key player for them this season. Former player Gavin Kizito is also back with the Club.

Villa coach Dusan Stojanovic is optimistic about his team’s chances this season.

“We are on a mission to revive our badge’s pride and seek support from the Jogoos family,” he said.

“We promise to fight relentlessly and bring joy. Despite strong opposition, our focus remains unwavering. Together, we will restore our badge’s pride, never giving up, determined to prove ourselves as #OneTeam.”

Kitara FC make return to UPL

Kitara, who won the FUFA Big League last season, will be looking to make an impression in their first season in the top flight.

They will be without Joseph Mbabali and Clinton Kamugisha who are both injured, but defender Dudu Ramadhan is available for selection.

The Royals have signed more than ten players in the transfer window, and they will be hoping to hit the ground running.

“We had a great preparation drawing just one and winning 8 which is a motivation for us,” said coach Brain Ssenyondo.

“However, we know the league is entirely a challenging and rigorous campaign but we are set and up for the task beginning with our match day one opponent.”

The other two matches on the opening day of the season see Mbarara City coach Wasswa Bbosa will battle NEC at Kakyeka Stadium while Soltilo Bright Stars will host BUL at Kavumba.
