Success, it seems, has followed Ibrahim Sekagya at every step of his coaching journey, and now the New York Red Bulls are rewarding it.
The club announced Tuesday that Sekagya, the head coach of New York Red Bulls II, has been promoted to a full-time First Team Assistant Coach, a move many around the organization say is well deserved.
“We are pleased to add Ibra [Sekagya] to our first team coaching staff on a full-time basis,” said Head of Sport Jochen Schneider.
“He has led the development of many great players at NYRB II and has guided the team to a great start to the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro season. He has earned this opportunity.”
Indeed, Sekagya’s promotion comes on the heels of a remarkable run with NYRB II. Since taking over as head coach in February 2023, the former Ugandan international transformed the team into a powerhouse.
In his first full season, he steered the squad to the MLS NEXT Pro Eastern Conference semifinals with a 14-8-6 record.
This year, he elevated the bar even higher: NYRB II are off to their best start in franchise history, sitting atop the Eastern Conference with an 8-2-2 record, 27 points and a league-leading 27 goals scored through 12 matches.
Beyond the wins, Sekagya’s impact has been felt in player development, a core mission for the club’s second team.
Under his guidance, young talents like Omar Valencia, now the First Team’s assist leader, and Mohammed Sofo, who has tallied seven goals across all competitions, have flourished.
Sekagya will assume his new duties immediately, though he will coach one final NYRB II match this Saturday against Chattanooga FC. A new head coach for NYRB II will be named soon.
For Sekagya, the promotion is also a full-circle moment. A former Red Bulls player himself, he made 41 appearances for the club from 2013 to 2014, helping secure the 2013 Supporters’ Shield.
He also spent six years at Red Bull Salzburg, further deepening his ties to the Red Bull soccer family.
