The Kenya Simbas recovered from last week’s loss to win the second leg of the Elgon Cup and claim the trophy on aggregate score over Uganda Rugby Cranes.
The Simbas were 20-13 winners, while the Lionesses were 87-03 dominators over the Lady Cranes at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium at Mamboleo, Kisumu City.
Just like in Uganda a week earlier, Kenya Simbas were quick starters, slotting in a penalty and registering a converted try before Uganda could get any taste of the action.
Uganda would later get a penalty, which Ivan Magomu converted, to register Uganda’s only points of the half, and send the game into the break at 10-03.
Just seconds into the second half, Jone Kubu caught the Cranes napping to cross for Kenya’s second try of the game and push the game to 17-03.
A host of chances later, Ivan Magomu combined with Timothy Kisiga to give Uganda a glimmer of hope with a try of their own. Liam Walker’s conversion and penalty moments later reduced the deficit to just 4 points.
With 5 minutes left on the clock, Jone Kubu scored a penalty to push Kenya’s lead back to seven and consequently win the game for Kenya.
Kenya Simbas retain the Elgon Cup, a trophy and bragging rights they’ve had on that side of the Elgon since 2016 without retreat.
It was a rough afternoon for the Lady Cranes, who were pummeled lifeless by much more experienced Kenya lionesses.
They lost 87-03, with Tina Akello scoring the Lady Cranes’ only points from the game.
The Lionesses showed the experience and might of playing against the World’s best during the WXV tournament, while Uganda could only afford a makeshift side, highly lacking tactical readiness.
