Uganda Badminton League Shuttles Off with Expanded Participation

The second edition of the Uganda Badminton League shuttled off on April 6th at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium, with school-level matches taking center stage.

The schools category had a significant rise in participation, featuring nine girls’ secondary schools, seven boys’ secondary schools, and three primary schools.

Newcomers like Nawandala SS (Iganga), St. Michael International, Gayaza High School, St. Catherine Primary School, Green Valley Primary School, and Progressive SS add fresh faces to the competition.

Action Continues on April 20th

Following the opening games, the school league resumes on April 20th 2024. Notably, Kangululu memorial and the 2023 defending champions (boys), Kibuli SS , who missed their opening games, will be in action on the 20th.

This day will also see the commencement of the Super League and Corporate League’s second seasons of the Uganda Badminton League.

Mbogo Starts Strong, Aims for Undefeated Run

Mbogo High School, last year’s girls’ secondary school champions, began their title defense with dominant victories over Mwesigwa Elizabeth‘s Nawandala SS (7-0) and Progressive SS (7-0).

Their captain, Nakiyemba Nazifah, expressed their determination to not only retain the title but also achieve an undefeated run.

The Uganda Badminton Association’s events coordinator, Ronald Lule, highlighted a key change for this season: an increased number of games played per tie.

“We had to increase the number of games played per tie from 5 to 7 games this season to allow more players to participate” Lule told Nnalubaale Sports

  • Schools League (Girls): Progressive SS defeated Nawandala SS (6-1), Gayaza High School fell to Kinawa High School Mugogo (3-4), Kinawa High School Mugogo lost to Progressive SS (1-6), Mbogo dominated Progressive SS (7-0), and Gayaza secured a win against Nawandala SSS (6-1).
  • Schools League (Boys): Kinawa High School-Kawempe defeated Progressive SS (7-0), Nawandala SSS lost to Progressive SS (1-6).
  • Primary Schools’ League: St. Catherine Primary School was defeated by Green Valley Primary School (2-5).

  • Boys’ Table: Kinawa High School Kawempe and Progressive SS lead with 2 points each.
  • Girls’ Table: Mbogo High School tops the chart with 4 points, followed by Progressive SS (4 points), Gayaza High School (2 points), and Kinawa High School Mugongo (2 points).
  • Primary School Table: Green Valley Primary School stands at the top with 2 points.
Remembering Last Season’s Champions:

For reference, Mbogo High School (Girls), Kibuli SS (Boys), Ndejje University (Super League), and CFK Badminton Academy (Corporate League) were the 2023 champions.
