Kinawa High School Kawempe dominated the boys’ category of the Uganda Badminton Schools League, winning all four matches played and securing a decisive 12 points.
Their closest competitor, Mark Sekyondwa‘s Progressive Secondary School, fell short with 9 points. This victory marks a significant improvement from Kinawa’s third-place finish in the league’s inaugural edition (2023), which was won by Kibuli Secondary School.
The team’s success can be attributed to strategic talent scouting. The 2022 recruitment of Katungulu Alamazan and Kadoli Fredrick from Mbale district significantly boosted their performance. Further additions like Mabuya Abdul Razak and Mutesasira Fredrick in early 2024, under coach Frank Muwuluzi’s guidance, solidified their path to victory.
Kinawa’s badminton prowess extends beyond the 2024 league title. They secured second place in the 2023 National Schools Challenge and a commendable third place in the 2023 East Africa Schools Challenge.
Mbogo High School Retains Girls’ Championship
Mbogo High School retained their championship title in the girls’ division, amassing an impressive 15 points across five ties. Progressive Secondary School followed closely with 12 points.
Attributing their success to consistent training, Mbogo’s captain, Nazifah Nakiyemba, highlighted the importance of internal tournaments like inter-house competitions in honing their players’ skills.
Additionally, Mbogo benefitted from having players participate in both the schools’ league and the Uganda Badminton Super League, granting them an edge over their rivals. Buoyed by their victory, Mbogo looks forward to the upcoming East Africa Games with renewed motivation.
Ebenezer Junior School Triumphs in Primary Category
Only three primary schools participated in the league this year. Ebenezer Junior School emerged victorious, collecting 12 points.
