On the quest to defend the 2023 Africa 7s men’s crown, the Uganda Rugby Cranes have been drawn against familiar foes and hosts Zimbabwe in Pool C.

Uganda will meet with Zimbabwe, whom they dispatched on the road to winning the 2022 Men’s Africa 7s in Kampala.

Uganda defeated Zimbabwe 28-00 in the final of the 2022 edition thanks to tries from Timothy Kisiga(2), Michael Wokorach, and Ian Munyani, all converted by the reliable Philip Wokorach.

Still in Pool C, Uganda will also face Burkina Faso, whom they baptised 50-00 in the group stages of the 2022 Africa 7s, before lining up against a stubborn Algerian outfit with the hope of securing Olympic representation.

South Africa’s Blitzboks, who were shadows of their former selves on the 2022-2023 HSBC Calendar and failed to ensure direct qualification, are seeded in Pool A against Madagascar, Tunisia, and Cote d’Ivoire.

The Blitzboks failed to overtake Australia and Samoa in the later stages of the HSBC series and will now have to secure their Olympic spot by winning the Rugby Africa Sevens Cup.

The Kenya Shujaa, second runners-up from 2022, have been drawn in Pool B alongside Zambia, Namibia, and Nigeria.

Kenya will be hoping to exert revenge on Uganda, who mauled them out of contention in 2022, and the Blitzboks, with whom they have had battles on the HSBC stage.

The 2023 Africa Men’s 7s games are scheduled to take place in Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club from 16th to 17th September.
