The Tanzania U20 Women’s football national team snatched a point from Uganda in the opening game of group A of the 2023 All Africa Games at at Cape Coast Stadium, Ghana on Saturday night.

Tanzania needed Aisha Juma‘s late goal to share spoils with Uganda in a 1-all draw. In the 41st minute, Zaina Nandede released Margret Kunihira who curled the ball to the far right bottom corner to put the Queen Cranes in the lead.

However, in the 89th minute of the game, Aisha Mnunka escaped from Uganda’s defenders and clinically finished past Ugandan goalkeeper Sharon Kaidu to level the matters.

“We knew Tanzania was going to play long and win the first ball as well but we prepared well the girls and executed however, the opponents were better in terms of physicality and in the last minutes, the girls lacked concentration and Tanzania snatched a point,” said Queen Cranes coach Sheryl Botes.

“Opening games are always hard and tricky but the girls tried their best and I believe, we gonna improve on few things to get positive results in the next games,” concluded Botes.

Uganda now sits third on the table behind Tanzania and hosts Ghana who beat Ethiopia 1-0 thanks to Comfort Owusu‘s lone strike.

Ethiopia who are the bottom of the table, will play Uganda in the next game on Tuesday 12th, March, 2024. The top two teams from each group will progress to the semifinals of the tournament.
