Uganda Martyrs University took a step closer to qualifying from the group stage of the University Football League with a 2-1 away win over the University of Kisubi on Thursday.

The result saw Uganda Martyrs move to six points in Group A, having already defeated Bugema University 3-1 in their opening game.

Midfielder Akbar Ssentongo had a first-half brace for the visitors, scoring in the 13th and 22nd minutes to take his tally to four goals in two games.

Captain Musa Musasizi scored a consolation goal for University of Kisubi.

Uganda Martyrs coach Eric Kisuze was impressed with his team’s character, but believes they need to improve their finishing.

“Performance was not bad and our strategy was to play well and hold on to the ball,” Kisuze said.

“We created a lot of chances but we did not take away most of them but we shall improve. There is fatigue in the players since they have played more games in another competition.”

“We have another challenge that we have conceded twice in the two games we played but we shall address it.”

Kisuze also praised Ssentongo’s performance

“Ssentongo Akbar is a good player,” Kisuze said.

“This is his last season since he is in his final year at the University. His performance is good and he improves in each and every game he plays.”

“He even had a chance to score a hattrick but that did not happen. He is one of the players we are looking at to lead us to the top if he doubles his performance and remain consistent.” he concluded.

University of Kisubi, on the other hand, suffered their second consecutive defeat, but captain Musa Musasizi is optimistic that they can still qualify for the group stage if they perform well in their next games.

“We tried our level best,” Musasizi said.

“We did better than the previous match since we conceded three goals against Kabale. This is good improvement.’

“In the second half we really tried to play well. We still have a couple of games and if we win them then we have a chance to qualify for the group stages,” he concluded.
