The first ever CECAFA U-18 Women’s Championship kicks off today with two fixtures, as Uganda takes on Ethiopia in the highlight of the opening day.
The game will be played at 6pm at Azam Complex stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Uganda is coached by Ayub Khalifah, who has described the game against Ethiopia as a “big task.”
“We are facing a tough team and we expect a big challenge,” Khalifah said.
“We have worked on every department to ensure that we get maximum points over Ethiopia,” he added.
Ethiopian teams have been superior to Khalifah’s teams over the years in different tournaments.
The last time the two teams faced was last year in the U-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers, and Ethiopia ejected Uganda on away goal rule after a 3-3 aggregate.
The other game today will see Burundi take on hosts Tanzania at 3pm.
The tournament will be played on a round-robin format, with the top team at the end of the tournament being crowned champion.
The CECAFA U-18 Women’s Championship is a new tournament, but it is sure to be a great showcase for the future of women’s football in East Africa.
Both Uganda and Ethiopia are strong teams, and the other teams in the tournament are also capable of winning.
