When the Uganda Women’s Table Tennis national team made the quarterfinals of the Africa Senior Championships, all they needed was one more win to secure a spot at the 2024 World Championships.
The Pearl of Africa team lost the encounter to Algeria but, they still had a chance to make it to the global stage by winning a placement game against Mauritius in the 5th-8th round face-off.
The action on Table 4 saw Uganda’s captain Parvin Nangonzi, Jemmimah Nakawala, and Ivy Nekesa all lose their encounters in a 3-0 loss to bury their World Championship hopes.
After falling short of the set target, next on the cards was a classification game, an East African derby Ethiopia won 3-1. Nakiwala won her game against Feven Kinfu to stop another sweep.
In short, the ultimate goal of booking a slot at the World Championship wasn’t secured but the immense experience and exposure of facing the best on the continent is a big plus to team Uganda.
