Ugandan boxers are aiming to reach the quarterfinals of the Africa Elite Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships in Yaounde, Cameroon, in order to secure a share of the $1 million prize money.
The quarterfinals are guaranteed to pay out $1,250 (Shs 4.5 million) to each boxer who loses, regardless of whether they win a medal.
This is a significant increase from the previous prize money of $500 (Shs 1.8 million) for quarterfinal losers.
The new prize structure also means that gold medalists will receive $15,000 (Shs 54 million), down from $20,000 (Shs 74 million) in previous years.
Silver medalists will receive $10,000 (Shs 37 million) and bronze medalists will receive $5,000 (Shs 16.5 million).
The Ugandan team is led by captain Joshua Tukamubebwa, who will compete in the light welterweight division.
Other members of the men’s team include Kassim Mulungi (featherweight), Joseph Kalema (minimum weight), Solomon Geko (heavyweight), James Baraka (super heavyweight), Wasswa Ssali (lightweight), Ukasha Matovu (welterweight), Muzamir Ssemuddu (light middleweight), Ronald Okello (middleweight), Lawrence Kayiwa (Cruiserweight), and Mukiibi (light heavyweight).
