Uganda’s women’s basketball team, the Gazelles, finished second in Group C at the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket 2023, and will now face Democratic Republic of Congo in a qualifier for the quarterfinals.
The Gazelles defeated Senegal 85-83 on Saturday, in a game that was considered to be one of the toughest in the group.
The win was a major boost for the team, and head coach Alberto Antuna said that they will use it as a stepping stone for the upcoming match against Congo.
“We are happy for finishing second in the toughest group of Afrobasket,” Antuna said.
Congo has not won a game at this year’s Afrobasket, after falling to both Nigeria and Egypt in Group D.
However, Antuna is not taking them lightly, and said that they are a “really physical team” and “really an athletic team.”
A clash with regional neighbors Rwanda awaits in the quarterfinals, should the Gazelles hit that stage.
However, Antuna is focused on the task at hand, and said that “from now on, we are just focusing in Congo.”
The qualifier between Uganda and Congo will be played on Tuesday, August 1, at the BK Arena in Kigali at 10:00PM Ugandan time.
