Uganda’s national men’s senior basketball team, the Silverbacks, have been forced to withdraw from the Olympic pre-qualifiers due to a lack of funds.
The tournament is set to take place in Lagos, Nigeria, from August 15-18. The Silverbacks were scheduled to face off against Senegal, Mali, and Nigeria in the group stage.
This is the second time in recent months that Uganda has been forced to withdraw from an international basketball tournament due to financial constraints.
In June, the team failed to participate in the FIBA Afro-CAN qualifiers in Tanzania for the same reason.
The lack of funding for sports in Uganda is a major problem that has held back the development of the country’s athletes.
In order to compete at the highest level, teams need access to adequate training facilities, equipment, and travel expenses.
Without these resources, it is very difficult for Uganda to produce world-class athletes.
