Avengers Cricket Club will be looking to make history on Sunday when they take on heavyweights Aziz Damani in the final of the National T20 Cup at the Lugogo Cricket Oval.

The Avengers have never won any silverware in the local league, but they handed themselves a stupendous opportunity to write history last Sunday when they upended Damani’s sister side, Aziz Damani Development, in the semifinals.

They now face a colossal task to oust a stonker in Damani who have won the league five times in a row.

Everything, literally everything points towards a Damani victory. They’re perennial winners, and arguably are the best team in the country.

Hope for Avengers

However, Robinson Turinawe, the Avengers’ head coach, is backing his charges to produce a bombshell.

“We are considered the underdogs, but I believe we have a huge chance. We beat the other Damani and that wasn’t by chance. We have a chance to make history, and for me this is motivation for us,” Turinawe told this website.

Turinawe appreciates the arsenal their opposition harbors, and admits the final will be a gritty affair. He however, is adamant they will stick to their philosophy on Sunday.

“We are a team comprised of budding youngsters from the U-19. We have maintained the theory that every game is a learning curve and that will not change on Sunday.”

Riazat ready for Avengers’ challenge

For Riazat Ali Shah, Damani’s all-rounder, the hunger for success never ends. They are aiming at continuing with their trend, but insists they will not undermine their opponent.

“We are always looking at winning something and this is another chance for us to do that, but we won’t take them lightly.”

“They have some good talented players like Christopher Kidega. The way he played in semis, he was in good form. Their captain Yash is in form. Abhishek and Harsh are also good.

“They are mixture of young and experienced players, but our team is also getting strong after Alpesh joining. We are looking for a good game on Sunday.”

The final of the National T20 Cup is sure to be a closely contested affair, and it will be interesting to see if the Avengers can pull off a shock victory.
