The Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) held its monthly assembly for February on March 3rd at the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC), marking the start of its 2025 activities.

During the assembly, former USPA president Jim Muganga led a session on understanding and enhancing personal value.

He emphasized that USPA serves as a vehicle for professional growth, highlighting the importance of networking and self-improvement within the association.

By urging journalists to value the association and recognize its potential to open doors, he underscored the significance of networking, professionalism, and continuous self-improvement.

His own career trajectory, from USPA to the World Bank, serves as an inspiring example of how the association can be a stepping stone to greater opportunities.

Subsequently, current President Moses Alsayed Lubega reinstated the standing committees from the previous term to ensure stability.

The appointment of new leaders, such as Kent Ararenge as chairman of the Membership Committee and Stephen Ouma moving to the Disciplinary Committee, introduces fresh dynamics to key areas.

The full cabinet was also announced, with Becky Cynthia Nakimera as Vice President, Sarah Adong as Assistant General Secretary, Dorothy Nekesa as Assistant Organizing Secretary, and Laurian Lubulwa as Assistant Treasurer, strengthening the executive team.

They join President Lubega, General Secretary Shafik Ssenoga, Treasurer Amon Ngabo, and Organizing Secretary Francisco Bwambale, who were elected in November of the previous year.

Denise Namale’s appointment as Personal Assistant to the President further enhances the leadership structure. Shortly after naming the cabinet, the president announced plans to host the Annual Gala and the Road Safety Campaign once final logistics are finalized.

The return of the Plascon-USPA Monthly Awards was a highlight. The winners for February, March, and April were recognized and will receive their prize money from Plascon at a later time, motivating journalists to excel in their reporting.

Gonzaga Kakeeto’s Nnalubaale Sports feature story, “Uganda Badminton League Dream Club: The Club of Hope,” was among the winners in the Print/Website category.

The Nile Special USPA Monthly Award for February went to Jacob Kiplimo, recognized as the standout athlete for his remarkable achievement in setting a men’s half marathon world record.

He also became the first runner to break the 57-minute mark during his victory in Barcelona. His achievement earned him 320 points, securing him the top spot ahead of the Gazelles, who received 275 votes.

Additionally, other significant performances were acknowledged, including the Hippos for their impressive win over the Heathens, the Silverbacks for qualifying for the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket Qualifiers, and the Cricket Cranes for their strong performance at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Challenge League B.
