The Uganda Rugby Union 7s dubbed Wakiso 7s will open the annual Nile Special Rugby 7s scheduled to kick-off this weekend at Kings Park Arena Bweyogerere.
The new circuit replaced the Mileke 7s that were unfortunately cancelled on the eleventh hour due to circumstances beyond the organising committee.
This was revealed by the URU Chief Technical Officer, Ramsey Olinga during the Nile Special Rugby 7s launch press briefing today at Kings Park.
“World over clubs are the foundation of the respective national teams. Often the strength of a national side directly reflects the state of the respective league. So the success of the 7s Rugby Cranes side has obviously been a combination of many factors but key of these are the clubs,” Olinga noted.
Now, with the national team still abroad and set to raise the flag high in Chile, the move to finally have the national 7s on without the national team players will definitely unearth new talent.
This is the kind of competitiveness that will enable the game to cultivate from the grassroots level to the national team and make the country proud.
What the National 7s Sponsors said
Away from the technical aspects, the long wait for local action from fans will come to an end and the title sponsors Nile Special have a plan to make the return a colourful one.
John Paul Ssemakula, the connections manager Nile Breweries rallied fans and revelers to turn up in big numbers to cheer their respective clubs as they also have fun.
“The 7s have that carnival feel to them that as a brand we shall seek to tap into to give fans a memorable 7s series. There will be lots of promotions and artistes to entertain the crowd,” Ssemakula said adding.
“While we celebrate the 7s Rugby Cranes, we urge all fans to turn for the 7s series to watch the next big stars in action. This is where future rugby cranes stalwarts get to sharpen their skills,” he said.
