Walukuba Barbarians opened the 2025 Uganda National Rugby 7s season in style, defending their Kabaka Coronation 7s title with a convincing 19–5 win over Heathens in Sunday’s final at Kyadondo Rugby Club.
The Barbarians reached the final after a hard-fought 12–5 semifinal win against Rhinos. Heathens had earlier edged Buffaloes 10–7 in a heated Kyadondo derby.
In the women’s final, Thunderbirds blanked Walukuba Titans 15–0 to lift the crown. Thunderbirds narrowly beat She Wolves 5–0 in the semifinals, while Titans defeated Avengers 12–0 to reach the final.
The win marks back to back Coronation 7s titles for Walukuba, who claimed last year’s edition at Wankulukuku. Meanwhile, defending women’s champions Avengers bowed out in the semifinals.
With the Titans finishing second, rugby in Busoga continues to show promise. They earned UGX 3 million for their run, while the Barbarians took home UGX 5 million for winning the men’s competition.
The National 7s series continues next weekend with the Gulu Sevens, set for August 9–10 at Pece Stadium.
