Wananchi stage wonderful comeback to win Hockey Uganda Cup

Wananchi staged a comeback from 2 goals down to win over Weatherhead 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time play at the National Hockey Ground in Lugogo on Sunday

Colline Batusa scored in the 21st minute, Brian Okodi Junior doubled the lead in the 37th minute before Shafiq Byamukama stole the show with two late goals.

In penalties, Byamukama continued to shine, scoring two spots. Innocent Tumukunde scored the other two spots, covering up for Ellias Okello, Jackson Musinguzi, and Emmanuel Baguma.

Weatherhead lost from upfront. Brian Okodi Junior, Maxwell Mugisa, and Solomon Mutalya missed, while Colline Batusa scored one and missed the second spot as Ashiraf Tumwesigye scored two spots, but it was not enough.

In the Women’s Uganda Cup, Kampala Hockey Club defeated Weatherhead 4-1 in the final. Sandra Namukasa scored twice, Ingrid Nabayiga and Lucky Akello added a goal each, while Anita Atim scored for the losing side.

Ashraf Tumwesigye of Weatherhead was named the Most Valuable Player, and Shafiq Byamukama of Wananchi was announced Uganda Cup Top Scorer with 9 goals.

For women’s individual awards, Lucky Akello of Kampala Hockey Club was named MVP, as young star Jolly Alimo of Wananchi and Anita Atim of Weatherhead were the top scorers, tied on 14 goals.

At the same event, Wananchi Men’s and Women’s teams were crowned Uganda Hockey League Champions, while Emmanuel Baguma of Wananchi was named MVP, Jackson Musinguzi of Wananchi was the league’s top scorer with 43 goals, and She Wananchi Jolly Alimo claimed both awards in the Women’s League.
