This year’s edition of the Zabasajja Memorial Open Chess Championship will get underway on 25th January up until 28th, the federation has confirmed.
Zabasajja, one of the five events that make up UCF’s Grandprix calendar will take place at Nob View Hotel in Ntinda.
It is the tournament that will conclude the calendar, and also provide the final standings of the Grandprix circuit which serves as a qualifier for all the zonal, continental and international competitions.
It is based on a points system where the top 20 players earn points based on their performance in each Grandprix event.
The winner of each given event gets 25 points and the player who finishes 12th in any given event gets 1.
Rajab Kamoga and FM Haruna Nsubuga are currently tied in the No.1 position each with 53 points in the Grandprix standings.
They are closely followed by FM Bob Bibasa, IM Elijah Emojong and FM Harold Wanyama who are on 49,48 and 46 points respectively.
At the conclusion of Zabasajja, the top twelve in the Grandprix standings will face off at the Super 14 round robin event.
To make the 14, the National Junior Champion who in this case is Mathew Mwase and a player who will be chosen by UCF (wild card) will join the mix.
It is from the Super 14 that the top five- who constitute as the national team- especially during the Olympiad years are selected from.
The same procedure is followed in the Ladies section.
