Uganda Cup 2023: KOBs Invade Heathens In Lions Cup Clash

As far as stories fit, this is one. It is a Lions’ Cup clash this weekend in the Uganda Cup semi-finals as the KCB-sponsored KOBs cross the road to play eternal nemesis Heathens.

The Platinum Credit Heathens and KCB KOBs are in a replay of last year’s unorthodox semi-final at the latter’s grounds. After 80 minutes, both teams were locked at 16-all and went in for extra time.

After extra time, Uganda’s two most successful rugby clubs were still level. Because the two teams had been served a yellow card each, a coin toss was the next deciding metric – and this landed in Heathens’ favour.

It will be a battle of two left-footed playmakers and former Uganda Rugby Cranes U20 captains, Heathens’ Daniel Malcolm Okello and KOBs’ Josiah Ssempeke. The two youngsters were on song this past weekend to inspire late second-half wins for their sides.

It is always a blockbuster when these two meet. In the premiership, a masterful Aaron Ofoywroth drop goal won it late for the Heathens at Legends.

At the same time, the return leg at Kyadondo was dominated by questionable officiating, which saw referee Wutimber serve time away from the game.

Heathens will be looking to make it to another final and, hopefully, a thirteenth title, while the KOBs will be looking to go all the way and land a tenth.
