Uganda’s Gazelles had a rest day yesterday after drawing the sword against South Sudan on Thursday night in a 74-53 victory in the ongoing Zone V Afrobasket tournament at the Lugogo Indoor Arena.
The 21 points margin win was a result of Maria Najjuma‘s double-double of 10 points and 18 rebounds flanked by Brenda Ekone and Hope Akello who had 14 points each.
But, it all went down to brilliant teamwork as Jannon Otto contributed 13 points while captain Flavia Oketcho made several assists and her game management was top-notch.
Uganda’s crowd had a scare to deal with and it was led by a familiar face in UCU Lady Canon’s Rose Akon, who scored in doubles of 15 points to give her side a fighting chance but in vain.
Now, Uganda’s target is to book a place in the finals and this will be achieved if they crack a whip on Rwanda today evening and hope Kenya beats Egypt to avoid mathematics in the final bend of the group-stage showdown.
The team that will be left standing after the finals on Sunday will qualify for this year’s Women AfroBasket tournament slated for July in Kigali, Rwanda.
