2026 FIFA World Cup | Group H | Monday June 15
- Cape Verde 0-0 Spain
FIFA World Cup debutants Cape Verde announced their arrival on football’s biggest stage with a spirited 0-0 draw against Spain at the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Monday night.
While Spain dominated possession and created the better chances, the Blue Sharks produced a disciplined defensive performance, backed by an inspired display from goalkeeper Vozinho, to earn a memorable point in their first-ever World Cup match.
Spain entered the tournament hoping to launch a strong bid for a second World Cup title after disappointing round-of-16 exits in Russia and Qatar. But Cape Verde, ranked 67th in the world, proved difficult opponents from the start.
Pedri threatened early with a low effort from outside the box, but Vozinho was alert to make the save. Marc Cucurella also came close, cutting inside from the left before firing over the bar.
Spain’s best opportunity arrived just before halftime. Cucurella’s cutback found Ferran Torres, whose side-footed effort struck the post. The rebound fell to Mikel Oyarzabal, but Vozinho produced another fine save to keep the scores level. Aymeric Laporte then went close from a corner as Cape Verde survived a wave of Spanish pressure.
Spain continued to push after the break. Oyarzabal headed wide from a Pedro cross before Fabian Ruiz tested Vozinho with a powerful header. Coach Luis de la Fuente turned to his bench, introducing Mikel Merino and teenage star Lamine Yamal in search of a breakthrough.
Yet Cape Verde remained organised and resilient. Their defence absorbed everything Spain threw at them, while Vozinho continued to frustrate the European giants with another key save from a Cucurella header late in the game.
The debutants nearly snatched a famous victory in the closing stages when Disney Borges met a corner with a clever header, but Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon reacted quickly to preserve the stalemate.
When the final whistle sounded, Cape Verde celebrated a historic result and a valuable point in Group play. Spain, meanwhile, were left wondering how they failed to find a way past the tournament newcomers.
Spain will next face Saudi Arabia before taking on Uruguay, while Cape Verde continue their campaign against Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.
