2026 FIFA World Cup | Round of 32聽|聽Wednesday July 1
- England Vs Democratic Republic of Congo – 7 pm | Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta
Democratic Republic of Congo have already made history at the FIFA World Cup, but head coach Sebastien Desabre believes his side still has another chapter to write.
As his team prepares to face England in Wednesday’s Round of 32 clash in Atlanta, the Frenchman insists the pressure belongs entirely to their opponents.
“The pressure, of course, is on England because they must continue their journey according to their objectives,” Desabre said on Tuesday.
“We will do everything to qualify. I told the players this is a beautiful opportunity to achieve something special, not just come here to experience the competition.”
Few expected DR Congo to progress from the group stage, yet they have continued to defy expectations. For Desabre, every milestone has been another sign of the team’s growth.
“Returning to the World Cup after 52 years was already an achievement,” he said.
“Winning our first point, scoring our first goal, winning a World Cup match and reaching the Round of 32 were all steps forward. We don’t have much to lose now, but that gives us even more motivation because we deserve to be here.”
Desabre believes his players are carrying the hopes of millions across DR Congo and the continent.
“In our country, and across Africa, football means everything to so many people,” he said.
“The players know they carry those dreams. They have won many hearts with their determination and resilience.”
Although DR Congo have already surpassed their pre-tournament target, the coach insists they are not ready to stop.
“Our World Cup has already been a success,” he said. “But the pressure is still on England.”
Desabre also revealed his side has prepared for every possibility, including penalties.
“We practise penalties because they can decide matches,” he said. “We have won shootouts before, against Nigeria in qualifying and at the Africa Cup of Nations. We are ready if it comes to that.”
England enter the match as favourites, but the tournament has already claimed heavyweight victims, with Germany and the Netherlands both knocked out in the Round of 32.

England manager Thomas Tuchel acknowledged that reality.
“We are the favourites, but the Round of 32 has shown how small the margins are,” he said.
DR Congo’s challenge is enormous, but after ending a 52 year World Cup absence and proving doubters wrong at every turn, Desabre’s side believes another upset is within reach.
