7 Ugandan boxers storm semi-finals of Africa Elite Boxing Championships

Seven Ugandan boxers have qualified for the semi-finals of the Africa Elite Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships in Yaounde, Cameroon.

The boxers, who are assured of at least a bronze medal, are Emily Nakalema (welterweight), Ukasha Matovu (welterweight), Ssali Wasswa (lightweight), Ronald Okello (middleweight), Grace Nankinga (light flyweight), Solomon Geko (heavyweight), and Erinah Namutebi (light welterweight).

Nakalema, Matovu, and Wasswa all won their quarterfinal matches on points, while Okello, Nankinga, Geko, and Namutebi received byes to the semi-finals.

The semi-finals will be held on Wednesday, August 3, with the finals taking place on Thursday, August 4.

The boxers who win gold will receive $15,000, silver medalists will receive $10,000, and bronze medalists will receive $5,000.

The following are the matchups for the Ugandan boxers in the semi-finals:

  • Emily Nakalema vs. Gisle Nyembo (DRC)
  • Ssali Wasswa vs. Idris Kitangila (DRC)
  • Ukasha Matovu vs. Zengala Boniface (DRC)
  • Ronald Okello vs. Tshama David (DRC)

The Ugandan boxers are hoping to bring home medals for their country, and they will be looking to make history by winning gold.
