Uganda’s Gazelles will have their sights set on a fifth-place finish at the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket after falling to Rwanda in the quarterfinals.
The Gazelles suffered a narrow 66-61 defeat to Rwanda on Wednesday, despite a game-high 31 points from Jannon Otto.
Uganda made a strong start to the game, opening up an 11-02 lead in the first quarter.
However, inspired by their President Paul Kagame in the stands, Rwanda fought back and only trailed by a single point at halftime as Uganda led 28-27.
The Gazelles’ momentum was further dampened by the injury to Jane Asinde, who landed awkwardly and hurt her ankle.
Rwanda took advantage of Asinde’s absence and outscored Uganda by 13 points in the third quarter to take a commanding lead.
The Gazelles put up a fight in the fourth quarter, but they were unable to overcome the deficit.
The only other Ugandan besides Jannon Otto to manage double figures was Melissa Akullu, who hit 16 points.
Uganda will now face Mozambique in the classification games today. A win would see them finish fifth in the tournament.
