Uganda’s national women’s basketball team, the Gazelles, defeated the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) 78-62 in the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket on Tuesday.
It was however a relatively slow start for the Gazelles, who were undone by the many turnovers, to fall 12-15 after the first quarter.
However, Alberto Antuna‘s charges fought back in the second quarter, taking it 18-15 to tie the game 30-30 at halftime.
The third quarter was even more impressive for Uganda as they dominated it, outscoring the DRC 23-15 to take a 53-45 lead
The Gazelles extended their dominion to the fourth quarter taking it 28-17, to eventually win by an 18-point difference.
Claire Lamunu’s 12 points and 14 rebounds, a first double double for Uganda at the showpiece, led the way while Jannon Jaye Otto picked up 18 points.
Jane Asinde continued with her top performance, picking up 18 points while Melissa Akullu added 12 for the Gazelles.
As a reward for the impressive display, Uganda will play at the quarter finals of the Women’s Afrobasket tournament for the first time in history against hosts Rwanda today at 6pm.
