Uganda National U-20 football team head coach Jackson Mayanja ‘Mia Mia’ has asserted that at this early preparation stage, the coaching staff is focusing on building the physical and fitness levels of the team.
The Hippos are currently in camp at the FUFA Technical Center, Njeru, gearing up for the Africa Cup of Nations slated for Egypt in February.
“We are at the moment working more on the players’ fitness levels, as we slightly touch on the tactical aspects,” said Mayanja to the media following their 1-0 over Jinja North United in a buildup match on Tuesday.
“Most of the players lack fitness as they were not playing for their clubs, while some are talented but are unattached. So we have to build them physically.”
The former KCCA FC and Cranes legend also revealed that they will be involved in more friendly matches as the team tries to gel.
“Tomorrow (Wednesday), we shall play BUL, play it again on Saturday before taking on KCCA FC.”
Should Uganda make the last four in the Africa Cup, they will be guaranteed a place in the FIFA U-20 World Cup, set for Indonesia later this year.
