The Real Stars Sports Awards, entering their 6th year, celebrated the outstanding performances of three athletes in December.
Nuhu Batte from boxing, James Boogere from football, and Margaret Baagala from netball were recognized for their exceptional achievements.
Nuhu Batte: Boxing Dominance
Batte, a rising star in Ugandan boxing, enjoyed an undefeated season in the Uganda Boxing Champions League Season. 3, winning all his five bouts in 2024.
His most significant victory, came in December against his gym captain and national team captain, Ukasha Matovu, in the league finals at UMA on Boxing Day. This victory earned him the welterweight belt.
Batte outperformed Owen Kibira and Ezra Ssali to claim the December Boxer of the Month award. At the awards ceremony held at Lazio Restaurant in Kololo on January 7th, 2025, Batte expressed his gratitude, stating; “I thank the sponsors of this initiative. This is just the beginning. My dream is big, and my ambitions extend beyond this. I aspire to become an international boxer.”
James Boogere: Football’s Rising Star
James Boogere, a promising prospect for the Uganda Cubs, outshone his seniors, including Uganda Cranes member Jude Ssemugabi and CHAN captain Allan Okello, to win the December Footballer of the Month award.
Boogere’s impressive performance at the CECAFA Under-17 tournament, where he scored 7 goals in 4 games and guided Uganda to the AFCON Under-17 finals, solidified his recognition.
Margaret Baagala: Netball Excellence
Margaret Baagala secured the December Netballer of the Month award, beating fellow She Cranes players Gloria Aya, and professional netballer Mary Nuba Cholhok.
Baagala’s contribution to Uganda’s second-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations was instrumental in her award and she looks ahead to build on that in the forthcoming events.
