This year’s National Girls School Cricket Week finals will see two home schools face off tomorrow in Soroti.
Olila High School and Light SS booked their places in the finals after beating Jinja SS and Masaka SS by 96 and 26 runs respectively.
The first semifinal
Masaka won the toss in the first semifinal and opted to bowl. They picked up six wickets and conceded 79 runs.
But those runs proved to be a far-fetched target as they got their innings to a disappointing start.
Their captain Proscovia Alako who went against her team’s choice of batting first was bowled out in the second over after facing just five balls and getting three runs.
Light SS from that moment went on the front foot, picking wicket after wicket, and Masaka were unable to recover, as they lost by 26 runs.
Patricia Timong who scored the most runs (17) for Light SS had three wickets to her name while Winnie Itwaro had two.
However, the person who picked the very important wicket (Alako’s) was Patricia Apolot.
The second semifinal
In the second semifinal, defending champions Olila destroyed record holders Jinja SS by 96 runs.
In a disappointing display, no Jinja SS batter scored in double figures as they were bowled out.
Sarah Atim was responsible for the majority of the wickets. She got four, Malisa Ariokot picked two.
In Olila’s innings, Jimia Muhammad scored a half-century off 55 not out off 54 balls while Lorna Anyait and Esther Iloku got 34 and 43 respectively. Ariokot notched 10 not out as Olila set 158/2.
Soroti Cricket in the spotlight
Olila will now face Light SS in the final as they aim at retaining the title they have won two times in succession.
Light SS will be out to seek revenge having lost to their rivals in the group stages a couple of days ago.
After both teams qualified for the final, Felix Musana, the chairman of the Soroti Cricket Academy was left thrilled.
“I wish them the very best of luck in the finals and hope they continue to inspire more girls in the community to take up cricket.”
