Despite Uganda’s success stories in the sports world for decades, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni stressed that sports is a leisure activity.
“You can’t be doing sports and you say that you are working, that is playing,” President Museveni noted.
President Museveni’s submission shocked many during his New Year address in Rwakitura while to some, it wasn’t a source of distress.
This is the second time President Museveni has described sport as a leisure economy on national television with the first one inside the COVID-19 lockdown.
The big question is, with the President’s view, is the dream of using sports to turn Uganda’s youth “population bomb” into a “demographic dividend” a dream out of reach, as writer Vicent Kawuki noted in his book The Untapped Resource in Youth Employment and Sustainable Poverty Alleviation in Uganda?
