University side UCU Doves took Game One of the National Volleyball League finals series to move closer to this year’s title after stunning Sport-S.
UCU made an impressive start, with Gideon Angiro and Nickson Tumusiime dominating the Sport-S block, for an early lead.
They however later struggled as Sport-S recovered to level matters after the second set.
Thon Maker and Augustine Odongo added more energy and fight to Sport-S’ offense in the second and third sets.
It all looked like a Sport-S victory after taking the second and third sets with 25-18 for both.
However, Angiro and Vincent Odeke swung to action and fought hard to ensure Doves took the fourth set 26-24, to force a fifth.
It was UCU that started the final set well and despite a late fight from Sport-S, they held on to edge it 16-14.
UCU will be keen to produce another winning performance in the three-game series when the two sides meet for Game Two on Saturday.
