The story behind Prisons Netball Super League title victory

It’s not news that Prisons Netball Club are the champions of the Uganda Netball Super League season 2022/23.

They lifted the trophy on Saturday night at Kamwokya Community Sports Centre before a large crowd of fans.

For starters, few had Prisons in the title talk considering the quality of talent in both the National Insurance Corporation NC and KCCA NC teams.

However like NIC, Prisons lost key players in Jesca Achan and Alice Wassagali who went AWOL immediately after the 2022 Commonwealth games.

Ruth Meme was the other star player out injured but nonetheless they managed to snatch the title from KCCA, who led the table from the start of the season.

Prisons lost two games against title contenders NIC and KCCA in the first round, which put them on the wrong foot of winning the title.

“When we lost two games in the first round, we had to go back on board and rectify our mistakes,” Prisons Coach Imelda Nyongesa noted.

But in the second round, they returned a different side, winning all games and eventually taking the trophy by a point over KCCA.

“When we defeated NIC with that goal margin in the second round, it motivated the girls,” Nyongesa added.

The other key point to note is that Prisons shooter Christine Namulumba Kango finished as the league top scorer with 791 goals.

Her target of outscoring everyone saw her side pick vital wins against title contenders hence winning the personal gong and the league title.

“To me as a player, it means a lot, this is my second season, last time I failed and this season I wanted to win it for myself, my team, and my bosses,” Namulumba told Nnalubaale Sports.

KCCA NC’s chances were dealt a huge blow when they lost star player Sandra Nambirige after the first round.

This distorted their plans as they lost to NIC and Prisons and drew with Weyonje, sides they beat in the first round.
