Uganda’s Hippos secured their second consecutive victory in the CECAFA Regional U20 AFCON Qualifiers, defeating Burundi 4 -1 on October 9, 2024 at KMC stadium in Tanzania to reach Semifinal of CECAFA U20 AFCON qualifiers.
Striker John Paul Dembe led the charge with a first-half brace, while two Burundian own goals contributed to Uganda’s dominant win.
Samir Sulaiman‘s unfortunate deflection of Allan Ofoyrwoth’s ball in the second minute gave Uganda an early lead, and Dembe capitalized on the momentum to extend the advantage with a brace in the first half.
In the second half, another Burundian own goal sealed Uganda’s victory. The Hippos’ impressive performance has positioned them as strong contenders for a semi-final berth, which would secure their place in the upcoming U20 AFCON tournament.
Although Burundi managed to score a consolation goal in the 61st minute through Christopher Ndayikengurukiye, Uganda’s coach, Matia Lule, praised his team’s performance and tactical superiority.
The victory which comes on the back of a 3-0 over Ethiopia in the opening game, has placed Uganda at the top of the group with six points, three more than Burundi.
Uganda’s next challenge will be against South Sudan U20 on Friday, October 11, at 7 PM. The team is expected to engage with fans three hours before the match to build excitement and support.
