The Cricket Cranes lost their fourth consecutive T20 match to Namibia on Sunday, but there was one bright spot for the Ugandans: the performance of Robinson Obuya.
The 22-year-old opener scored a career-high 71 runs off 52 balls, including two fours and six sixes.
His innings helped Uganda to set a target of 186, but Namibia chased it down with four wickets to spare.
Obuya’s performance was particularly impressive given that he only made his national team debut on June 11.
He has quickly become a key member of the team, and his half-century against Namibia is a sign of things to come.
Uganda’s coach, Laurence Mahatlane, was pleased with Obuya’s performance, saying that he “backed himself up” and showed “self belief.”
Mahatlane also said that he was “happy with what we came looking to do” in the T20 series, which was to gain experience and confidence for the upcoming 50-over format.
The 50-over series between Uganda and Namibia will begin on Tuesday, July 11. Uganda will be hoping to bounce back from their T20 defeats and level the series at 1-1.
